BOYS IN THE ‘BURG
What our brothers have been up to this Spring ’21 semester
This Spring semester has been quite a busy period of time for all brothers in the chapter, whether it be with academics, extracurriculars, or life in general. Despite the hectic schedules that many of our brothers have, from heavy workloads stemming from difficult courses in a variety of academic majors to other extracurricular involvements, we’ve found ways to be social and brotherly this Spring.
Bryan Zapata, a junior brother studying Industrial Systems Engineering & Political Science, recently started meetings for Hispanic Journalists of America; a national organization of which he founded Virginia Tech’s colony.
“Hispanic Journalists of America is a professional Latinx organization that promotes more Hispanics to pursue roles in the media and entertainment industry, ” Zapata said. “We are on the road to becoming a student chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalist and will be the first student chapter in the state of Virginia.”
Brother Jackson Rifkin took it upon himself to design our Spring Recruitment t-shirt, which was found to be quite popular both within the chapter and outside of it.
“This year’s recruitment shirt was inspired by a 90s ski graphic. Minimalistic typography was also chosen to keep the design as minimalistic as possible and to not detract from the main image on the back,” Rifkin said. “It took roughly two hours to draw digitally on my computer and I am very happy with how it turned out.”
Matthew Woodring, a junior brother studying Computer Science who also serves as our current Vice President of Programming, has been working overtime to ensure that brothers are active and engaged this semester by coordinating numerous activities that cater to all interests within the chapter, such as intramural sports, hiking opportunities, and much more.
“I never imagined trying to plan events during a global pandemic let alone giving them the same experiences they normally have because now with the 10 person restriction it makes it challenging to gather as brothers in a group to promote brotherly love,” Woodring said. “We have had groups playing sports, participating in a die tournament, poker nights, and watch parties. All while mixing up the brothers we interact with and [we] manage to have a good time while staying safe.
